写真による「心象風景」のシリーズである。
カリフォルニアにあるシエラネバダ山脈は弧状列島が北米大陸にぶつかりサンウォーキンバレーから隆起したものである。二つの塊が衝突するときにパソリス花崗岩(マグマの塊が地上に露出したもの)を形成している。それが年月と共に岩の表面は風雨によって侵食されたり氷河によって削り取られたりしてさまざまな形態を生み出した。
私は大きな岩塊には興味はなく30センチ四方の中で展開する岩肌の風景に惹かれた。見る者によってその表情はさまざまなものを想像させる。そこに私はカメラを向けた。ようこそゲシュタルトの世界へ。

In California the Sierra Nevada mountain range rises up from the great valley of the San Joaquin, a product of an island arc - the size of Japan - colliding with the North American continent. The island arc subsided under the continent causing friction, creating batholitic granite when the two masses collided. Through the eons batholithic rock was forced to the surface as erosion and glaciers carved the soils. Eventually, granite fractured into forms such as those in this series of photographs. The tendency of the human mind to make sense of form invites definition. Each photograph represents a bundle of information to be defined by the viewer, welcoming a gestalt experience.

ジムはよくオレゴンの山々を歩く。ネイティブアメリカンのロックペインティングなどを見て歩いていたのを聞いたことがある。今回は、シエラネバダ山脈で遭遇した岩塊にカメラを向けた。彼の細部にこだわる性格は30センチ四方の範囲の岩肌をくまなく写し出す。風雨に侵食されたり、何万年も前に氷河によって削り取らたりして形成された岩肌の風景に執拗に迫る。そこに、亀裂や侵食により作り出された点や線からなる個別の形体から、より大きな全体的な枠組みによって創出される形体を見出している。それが「縛」である。
