ARTIST STATEMENT by Minori Yata

My art works are based on my every day life.
For two dimensional works, I use collage and drawing and painting to create personal statement as a journal. For the collage I use labels of everyday consumers products such as tags, tea bags, stamps, tickets from transportations..... etc. and some words from advertising of products. Sometimes I use forms of poetry and essays to blend in to collage for expressing my thoughts. My works are sometimes very personal which is reflecting of the day's experiences.
Artist's books create poetry of space. I express my every day journal into visual and thinking space in each page. Each page represents my poetry of visions composing with lines, colors and shapes with abstract forms and also representative images.
For sculptures, I assemble objects from everyday life, such as old door handles, caps from bottles or cans, kitchen utensils or interesting shapes of objects and something that is attracting my attention.
For performance art I collaborate with dancers, singers, actor actress, musicians, floral designer.....to create poetry of space. All the people who never get together before get together in my poetry space and all performing at the same time and create each and individual poetry.
For me life is a narration. There is no beginning nor an end. Only the imagination of the time exists. The space of time which I call NOW is only for a moment of time yet infinitive of time. I live for this moment and I create my life and my art. I would like to discover all aspects of beauty in this time and space on this earth and extend to the universe. I would like to enhance inner Experiencing the World war?during the childhood influenced my perspective of life and thinking mind greatly. These experiences brought me to see truth within, no more no less where I am stand and deal with each moment as the last moment of my life.

Thank you

MINORI YATA

Minori Yata’s multi-dimension art grew out of her Eastern upbringing and Western perspective. We met Yata at University of California San Diego in 1992. She was a visiting teacher in the Visual Arts Program, that encouraged students to “reach across media-specific boundaries into new forms of art”, fusing methods in innovative ways. Minori earned her Master's Degree 1987, and has continued to collaborate with faculty and students in this program.
Yata was then living in San Francisco, creating art, performing, teaching and working. She introduced us to her art in stages. My first impressions of her visual art delighted my senses. She had collected papers of everyday life, her tickets, her receipts and used these common momentos, origami paper, ink and paint to create collage; captured moments in time, geography and spirit. Her vibrant colors and use of nature created a visual haiku. These works began an ongoing series called “1000 Teardrops” dedicated to promoting world peace through art.
Our second impression was of Yata's soft spoken, very intelligent and caring manner. She lived her art and created beauty in her surroundings. Whether found objects embellished in her home, a stage setting for performance, or the flower shop she managed, everywhere she touches became a visual treat. Surrounded by young people looking to her for inspiration, Yata dispensed advice and encouraged creative divergence. She created an atmosphere of purpose and challenge in her studio.
Then Yata introduced us to her performance pieces. She created and arranged collaborative performance pieces to expand our Western thought immersion into Japanese art forms and sensibilites. Using dance, live music, and her own spoken word, Yata created installation spaces, transformed by light, soft spaces, and flowers, to an ongoing improvisation of sound and movement. From Butoh to modern dance, with soundscapes played on keyboard and Japanese koto, combined with Yata's poetry proclaiming peace, her group created something new, performances never before experienced , both cool and meditative at the same time. Yata and her Buddist Monk brother sponsored street theater. He had walked across the USA making his statement for World Peace.
Yata has moved on. She moved out of San Francisco in 2003, to Northern California. She now lives in New Mexico. Removed from the hustle of the city, she created a more peaceful life in the countryside, thus changing the essential nature of her art. As can be seen through the journals presented, she simplified, uncluttered and refined her work seeking the deeper meaning of new experiences.
